Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न बुद्धि पूर्वम् न अबुद्धम् स्मरामि इह कदाचन ।
मातृणाम् वा पितुर् वाहम् कृतम् अल्पम् च विप्रियम् ॥ ॥२-२२-८॥
Na buddhi pūrvam na abuddham smarāmi iha kadācana । Mātṛṇām vā pitur vāham kṛtam alpam ca vipriyam ॥ ॥2-22-8॥
Translation
I do not recall ever having done, knowingly or unknowingly, even a small unpleasant deed to my mothers or my father here.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे याद नहीं आता कि मैंने यहाँ कभी जान-बूझकर (बुद्धिपूर्वक) या अनजान में (अबुद्धम्), अपनी माताओं या पिता का थोड़ा सा भी अप्रिय (अनिष्ट) किया हो।
English Commentary
Rama vindicates his conscience. He asserts that his track record as a son is spotless. He searches his memory (smarāmi) and finds no instance where he caused even a alpam (tiny) amount of vipriyam (displeasure) to his parents, whether intentionally (buddhi pūrvam) or unintentionally (abuddham). By using the plural mātṛṇām (mothers), he includes Kaikeyi in this sphere of reverence. This statement serves as the moral foundation for his current action: since he has never hurt them before, he will not start now by defying their wishes, however painful the consequences may be for him.

राम आत्म-निरीक्षण (Introspection) कर रहे हैं। वे अपनी निष्कलंकता की घोषणा करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि उन्होंने 'बुद्धिपूर्वम्' (जानबूझकर) तो दूर, 'अबुद्धम्' (अनजाने में) भी कभी माता-पिता का दिल नहीं दुखाया। 'मातृणाम्' बहुवचन है, जिसमें कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी तीनों शामिल हैं। राम का तर्क यह है कि जब उन्होंने आज तक कोई 'विप्रिय' (अप्रिय कार्य) नहीं किया, तो आज वे राज्याभिषेक के लिए जिद करके कैकेयी को दुखी कैसे कर सकते हैं? यह उनका पिछला रिकॉर्ड (Track record) है जो उनके वर्तमान निर्णय को सही ठहराता है। वे अपनी मर्यादा को बनाए रखना चाहते हैं।
