Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दैवम् पुरुष कारेण यः समर्थः प्रबाधितुम् ।
न दैवेन विपन्न अर्थः पुरुषः सो अवसीदति ॥२-२३-१७॥
daivam puruṣa kāreṇa yaḥ samarthaḥ prabādhitum । na daivena vipanna arthaḥ puruṣaḥ so avasīdati ॥2-23-17॥
Translation
He who is capable of overpowering Destiny through his own human effort does not lose heart even if his objectives are thwarted by Destiny.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जो पुरुष अपने पौरुष (प्रयत्न) से दैव को दबाने (हराने) में समर्थ होता है, वह दैव के कारण अपने लक्ष्य (अर्थ) के नष्ट होने पर भी दुखी नहीं होता (या पराजित नहीं होता)।
English Commentary
Lakshmana argues that the struggle defines the man. A person who fights Destiny with Purushakara (human effort) remains spiritually undefeated. Even if Destiny obstructs the goal, the active resistance prevents the person from sinking into despondency (avasidati). Lakshmana implies that misery comes not from misfortune, but from the passive acceptance of it. Active resistance is the cure for grief.

लक्ष्मण कहते हैं कि संघर्ष ही जीवन है। जो व्यक्ति पुरुषार्थ करता है, उसे कभी पश्चाताप नहीं होता। यदि भाग्य बाधा डालता है, तो वीर पुरुष अपनी मेहनत से उसे हटा देता है। और यदि अंततः असफलता भी मिले, तो भी उसे संतोष रहता है कि उसने हार नहीं मानी। लेकिन यहाँ लक्ष्मण का भाव यह है कि पुरुषार्थ करने वाला कभी 'अवसीदति' (विषाद/दुख) को प्राप्त नहीं होता, क्योंकि वह भाग्य से लड़ना जानता है।
