Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदा तु बद्ध्वा भ्रुकुटीम् भ्रुवोर् मध्येनर ऋषभ ।
निशश्वास महा सर्पो बिलस्यैव रोषितः ॥२-२३-२॥
tadā tu baddhvā bhrukuṭīm bhruvor madhye nara ṛṣabha । niśaśvāsa mahā sarpo bilasyaiva roṣitaḥ ॥2-23-2॥
Translation
Then that tiger among men (Lakshmana), knitting his eyebrows into a frown, began to hiss (breathe heavily) like a furious great serpent in its hole.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब वे नरश्रेष्ठ (लक्ष्मण) अपनी दोनों भौहों के बीच भृकुटी तानकर, बिल में क्रोधित महासर्प की भाँति फुफकारने (लंबी साँसें लेने) लगे।
English Commentary
Lakshmana's anger now begins to manifest physically. The poet uses the metaphor of a 'Great Serpent' (Maha Sarpa). Just as a provoked snake hisses in its hole, Lakshmana breathes heavily with rage. The knitting of his brows signals immense dissatisfaction. Since Lakshmana is considered an incarnation of Shesha Naga (the divine serpent), this metaphor is both descriptive and intrinsic to his nature. His silence is breaking, signaling not the calm before the storm, but the beginning of the storm itself.

अब लक्ष्मण का क्रोध बाहर आने लगता है। कवि ने यहाँ 'महासर्प' की उपमा दी है। जैसे बिल में बैठा हुआ साँप छेड़े जाने पर फुफकारता है, वैसे ही लक्ष्मण क्रोध से लंबी और गर्म साँसें ले रहे हैं। 'भृकुटी तानना' उनके तीव्र असंतोष का लक्षण है। लक्ष्मण शेषनाग के अवतार माने जाते हैं, इसलिए साँप की उपमा यहाँ अत्यंत सार्थक और स्वाभाविक है। उनका मौन अब टूटने वाला है, और यह तूफान से पहले की शांति नहीं, बल्कि तूफान की शुरुआत है।
