Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रतिजाने च ते वीर मा भूवम् वीर लोक भाक् ।
राज्यम् च तव रक्षेयम् अहम् वेला इव सागरम् ॥२-२३-२८॥
pratijāne ca te vīra mā bhūvam vīra loka bhāk |
rājyam ca tava rakṣeyam aham velā iva sāgaram ॥2-23-28॥
Translation
I promise you, O Hero—may I not attain the world of heroes if I fail—that I shall protect your kingdom just as the shore protects the sea.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वीर! मैं आपसे प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ—यदि मैं ऐसा न करूँ तो मुझे वीरलोक (स्वर्ग) की प्राप्ति न हो—कि मैं आपके राज्य की रक्षा वैसे ही करूँगा जैसे तट समुद्र की रक्षा करता है।
English Commentary
This verse contains a beautiful and famous metaphor. Just as the shore (vela) contains the vast and powerful ocean, preventing it from flooding the land, Lakshmana promises to protect and contain Rama's kingdom. Lakshmana takes a solemn vow here. For a Kshatriya, the Vira Loka (World of Heroes/Heaven) is the ultimate goal; swearing by it underscores the gravity of his intent. He assures Rama that his only job is to sit on the throne; dealing with internal and external threats is Lakshmana's burden. This is a prime example of Lakshmana’s Dasya Bhava (attitude of servitude) combined with his role as the ultimate guardian/protector of Rama.

यह एक अत्यंत सुंदर और प्रसिद्ध उपमा है। जिस प्रकार समुद्र कितना भी विशाल और शक्तिशाली क्यों न हो, तट (वेला) उसे अपनी सीमाओं में रखता है और बिखरने से रोकता है, उसी प्रकार लक्ष्मण श्रीराम के राज्य की रक्षा करेंगे। लक्ष्मण यहाँ एक भीषण प्रतिज्ञा लेते हैं। 'वीरलोक' क्षत्रिय का अंतिम लक्ष्य होता है; इसकी शपथ लेना बात की गंभीरता को सिद्ध करता है। लक्ष्मण यह आश्वासन दे रहे हैं कि श्रीराम को केवल सिंहासन पर बैठना है, बाहरी और आंतरिक शत्रुओं से निपटने का कार्य लक्ष्मण का है। यह राम के प्रति लक्ष्मण के 'दास्य भाव' (सेवक भाव) और रक्षक के रूप में उनकी भूमिका का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
