न शोभ अर्थाव् इमौ बाहू न धनुर् भूषणाय मे ।
न असिरा बन्धन अर्थाय न शराः स्तम्भ हेतवः ॥२-२३-३०॥
na śobha arthāv imau bāhū na dhanur bhūṣaṇāya me |
na asirā bandhana arthāya na śarāḥ stambha hetavaḥ ॥2-23-30॥
Translation
These arms of mine are not for beauty, nor is my bow for decoration; my sword is not for tying (at the waist), and my arrows are not meant to be supports (walking sticks).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरी ये भुजाएँ केवल शोभा के लिए नहीं हैं, और न ही मेरा धनुष आभूषण मात्र है। मेरी तलवार कमर में लटकाने (बांधने) के लिए नहीं है और न ही मेरे बाण सहारे के लिए (लाठी की तरह) हैं।
English Commentary
This is one of the most spirited and quoted verses in the Valmiki Ramayana. With a mix of sarcasm and fury, Lakshmana defines the true purpose of his weaponry. He argues that a warrior's arms and weapons are not mere ornaments or showpieces. If injustice is occurring and weapons remain unused, bearing them is pointless. By saying 'arrows are not supports' (like walking sticks/pillars), he sarcastically remarks that he is not old or infirm to lean on them. Their purpose is destruction of the enemy. This verse reinforces Lakshmana’s stance that power must be exercised to protect Dharma; remaining passive while possessing strength is cowardice.

यह वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे ओजस्वी श्लोकों में से एक है। लक्ष्मण व्यंग्य और क्रोध के मिश्रण के साथ अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्रों का प्रयोजन स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि क्षत्रिय के हथियार कोई सजावटी वस्तु (Showpiece) नहीं होते। यदि अन्याय हो रहा है और हथियार का उपयोग नहीं किया गया, तो उन्हें धारण करने का कोई अर्थ नहीं है। 'शराः स्तम्भ हेतवः' (बाण खंभे या लाठी नहीं हैं) कहकर वे यह कटाक्ष करते हैं कि वे अभी वृद्ध या असहाय नहीं हुए हैं जो बाणों का सहारा लेकर चलें। इनका उद्देश्य शत्रुओं का नाश करना है। यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण की इस मानसिकता को पुष्ट करता है कि शक्ति का उपयोग धर्म की रक्षा के लिए अवश्य किया जाना चाहिए, निष्क्रिय रहना कायरता है।
