Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अमित्र दमन अर्थम् मे सर्वम् एतच् चतुष्टयम् ।
न च अहम् कामये अत्यर्थम् यः स्यात् शत्रुर् मतः मम ॥२-२३-३१॥
amitra damana artham me sarvam etac catuṣṭayam |
na ca aham kāmaye atyartham yaḥ syāt śatrur mataḥ mama ॥2-23-31॥
Translation
All these four (arms, bow, sword, and arrows) are for the suppression of enemies. I do not wish at all for the survival of anyone considered my enemy.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ये चारों (भुजा, धनुष, तलवार और बाण) मेरे शत्रुओं का दमन करने के लिए हैं। जो मेरा शत्रु माना जाता है, मैं उसे (जीवित रहने की) बिल्कुल भी इच्छा नहीं करता।
English Commentary
Referring back to the four items listed in the previous verse (arms, bow, sword, arrows), Lakshmana here clarifies their collective purpose: Amitra damana (suppression/destruction of enemies). Lakshmana’s language is uncompromising. He declares that anyone obstructing Rama’s coronation is his enemy, and he harbors no mercy for them. The phrase 'I do not wish for...' implies he cannot tolerate the very existence of such enemies. This reveals the facet of Lakshmana’s character where he is willing to transgress standard boundaries of restraint for Rama’s sake. For him, serving Rama’s interest is the ultimate Dharma, superseding all other considerations.

पिछले श्लोक (30) में लक्ष्मण ने जिन चार वस्तुओं (भुजा, धनुष, तलवार, बाण) का वर्णन किया था, यहाँ वे उनका सामूहिक उद्देश्य बताते हैं: 'अमित्र दमन' (शत्रुओं का नाश)। लक्ष्मण की भाषा यहाँ अत्यंत कठोर है। वे कहते हैं कि जो भी राम के अभिषेक के मार्ग में बाधा है, वह लक्ष्मण का शत्रु है, और लक्ष्मण अपने शत्रु के प्रति कोई दया-भाव नहीं रखते। 'न च अहम् कामये' का अर्थ है कि वे शत्रु के अस्तित्व को सहन ही नहीं कर सकते। यह लक्ष्मण के चरित्र का वह पक्ष है जहाँ वे राम के हितों के लिए नैतिकता की सामान्य सीमाओं को भी लांघने को तैयार रहते हैं। उनके लिए 'राम-हित' ही परम धर्म है।
