Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बद्ध गोधा अन्गुलि त्राणे प्रगृहीत शर आसने ।
कथम् पुरुष मानी स्यात् पुरुषाणाम् मयि स्थिते ॥२-२३-३५॥
baddha godhā anguli trāṇe pragṛhīta śara āsane |
katham puruṣa mānī syāt puruṣāṇām mayi sthite ॥2-23-35॥
Translation
When I have fastened the iguana-skin finger guards and taken hold of my bow, how can any man among men pride himself as a hero while I stand there?
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब मैंने अपनी उंगलियों में गोह के चमड़े का दस्ताना (गोध) पहन लिया हो और हाथ में धनुष धारण कर लिया हो, तब मेरे रहते हुए अन्य कौन सा पुरुष स्वयं को 'पुरुष' (वीर) कहलाने का साहस कर सकता है?
English Commentary
This verse represents the pinnacle of Lakshmana’s self-confidence. The Godha was a leather guard (often made of iguana skin) worn by archers to protect their fingers from the friction of the bowstring. Lakshmana asserts that once he is geared up for battle, the very notion of other 'heroes' becomes laughable. He challenges the world: who would dare call himself a man or a warrior while standing before Lakshmana? He is not merely boasting; he is trying to convince Rama that as long as Lakshmana breathes, Rama need not look to anyone else for protection or power.

यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण के आत्मविश्वास की पराकाष्ठा है। 'गोधा' धनुर्धारियों द्वारा पहना जाने वाला एक विशेष दस्ताना होता था जो धनुष की प्रत्यंचा की रगड़ से उंगलियों को बचाता था। लक्ष्मण कहते हैं कि जब वे युद्ध के लिए सज्ज हो जाते हैं, तो अन्य तथाकथित वीरों का अस्तित्व ही समाप्त हो जाता है। वे चुनौती देते हैं कि क्या किसी में इतना साहस है कि वह लक्ष्मण के सामने खड़ा होकर स्वयं को 'मर्द' या 'वीर' कह सके? यहाँ लक्ष्मण केवल अपनी प्रशंसा नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि वे राम को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं कि जब तक लक्ष्मण जीवित हैं, राम को किसी और की शक्ति पर निर्भर रहने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
