अद्य चन्दन सारस्य केयूरा मोक्षणस्य च ।
वसूनाम् च विमोक्षस्य सुह्Rदाम् पालनस्य च ॥२-२३-३८॥
adya candana sārasya keyūrā mokṣaṇasya ca |
vasūnām ca vimokṣasya suhṛdām pālanasya ca ॥2-23-38॥
Translation
Today, these arms are not for applying sandalwood paste, nor for wearing armlets, nor for hoarding wealth, but for the protection of friends (and distribution of wealth).
हिंदी अनुवाद
(मेरी ये भुजाएं) आज चंदन का लेप लगाने के लिए नहीं हैं, न बाजूबंद (केयूर) धारण करने के लिए हैं, न ही धन को संचित करने के लिए हैं, बल्कि मित्रों की रक्षा के लिए (और दान देने के लिए) हैं।
English Commentary
This verse (connected with verse 39) forms a single thought. Lakshmana rejects the life of luxury. As a prince, his arms were accustomed to sandalwood paste and jewelry, but today he declares such adornments meaningless. Vasunam vimokshasya implies the release or distribution of wealth (charity), rather than accumulation. Lakshmana’s philosophy here is one of sacrifice—the body and wealth serve only one purpose: the protection of loved ones (suhridam). He signals to Rama that he is not enslaved by palace comforts; like an ascetic warrior, he is ready to discard all luxuries to fulfill his duty.

यह श्लोक (और अगला श्लोक 39) एक वाक्य का निर्माण करते हैं। लक्ष्मण विलासिता के जीवन को नकार रहे हैं। राजकुमार होने के नाते उनकी भुजाएं चंदन और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित रहती थीं, लेकिन आज वे कहते हैं कि शरीर का यह शृंगार व्यर्थ है। 'वसूनाम् विमोक्षस्य' का अर्थ है धन का त्याग या दान करना। लक्ष्मण का दर्शन यहाँ त्यागमय है—शरीर और धन का उपयोग केवल अपनों (सुहृदाम्) की रक्षा और धर्म कार्य के लिए होना चाहिए। वे राम को यह जताना चाहते हैं कि वे राजमहल के सुखों के गुलाम नहीं हैं, वे एक तपस्वी योद्धा की भांति अपने कर्तव्य के लिए सब कुछ त्यागने को तैयार हैं।
