अग्र अक्ष्णा वीक्षमाणः तु तिर्यग् भ्रातरम् अब्रवीत् ।
अस्थाने सम्भ्रमः यस्य जातः वै सुमहान् अयम् ॥२-२३-५॥
agra akṣṇā vīkṣamāṇaḥ tu tiryag bhrātaram abravīt । asthāne sambhramaḥ yasya jātaḥ vai sumahān ayam ॥2-23-5॥
Translation
Looking at his brother askance (sidelong glance), he said: "This very great confusion/delusion has arisen in you entirely out of place (at the wrong time)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे अपने भाई (श्रीराम) को तिरछी आँखों (कटाक्ष) से देखते हुए बोले—"आप जैसे व्यक्ति का यह अत्यंत महान भ्रम (मतिभ्रम) सर्वथा अनुचित स्थान पर उत्पन्न हुआ है।"
English Commentary
Lakshmana begins to speak. He looks at Rama with a 'sidelong glance,' a sign of disagreement and sarcasm. He labels Rama’s stoicism as Sambhrama (delusion or confusion). Lakshmana argues that while patience is a virtue, it is 'Asthane' (out of place) here. Being calm in the face of gross injustice is not Dharma, but a delusion. Lakshmana is directly challenging the philosophical foundation of Rama’s acceptance, suggesting that passivity in this context is a grave error.

लक्ष्मण अब बोलना शुरू करते हैं। वे श्रीराम से सीधे आँख नहीं मिला रहे, बल्कि 'तिरछी नज़र' से देख रहे हैं, जो असहमति और व्यंग्य का चिन्ह है। वे श्रीराम के धैर्य को 'सम्भ्रम' (भ्रम या Confusion) कहते हैं। लक्ष्मण का कहना है कि धैर्य रखना अच्छी बात है, लेकिन "अस्थाने" (गलत जगह पर)। जब अन्याय हो रहा हो, तब शांति रखना धर्म नहीं, बल्कि कायरता या भ्रम है। लक्ष्मण श्रीराम के दार्शनिक आधार को ही चुनौती दे रहे हैं।
