सन्ति धर्म उपधाः श्लक्ष्णा धर्मात्मन् किम् न बुध्यसे ॥२-२३-८॥
santi dharma upadhāḥ ślakṣṇā dharmātman kim na budhyase ॥2-23-8॥
Translation
"O righteous one! There are many deceits disguised as Dharma that appear smooth and plausible; why do you not realize this?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे धर्मात्मा! धर्म के नाम पर बहुत से कपट-जाल (बहाने) रचे जाते हैं, जो ऊपर से चिकने (सच्चे) लगते हैं; क्या आप इसे नहीं समझते?"
English Commentary
Lakshmana warns Rama that 'Dharma' is often used as a mask for deceit. Dasharatha is using the pretext of 'keeping his word,' but Lakshmana calls this Dharma-upadha (trickery in the guise of Dharma). He argues that what Rama honors as a father's vow is actually a manipulative strategy to exile him. Lakshmana questions Rama's naivety, asking why he cannot see through the smooth, plausible surface of this 'Dharma' to the treachery lying beneath.

लक्ष्मण श्रीराम को चेतावनी देते हैं कि "धर्म" का उपयोग अक्सर धोखा देने के लिए किया जाता है। राजा दशरथ "सत्य-प्रतिज्ञा" का बहाना बना रहे हैं, लेकिन वास्तव में यह "धर्म-उपधा" (धर्म का छल) है। लक्ष्मण कह रहे हैं कि जिसे आप पिता का वचन मानकर पूज रहे हैं, वह वास्तव में आपको वन भेजने की एक चाल है। वे श्रीराम की सरलता पर प्रश्न उठाते हैं—कि वे इतने सीधे क्यों हैं कि धर्म के लबादे में छिपे कपट को नहीं देख पा रहे।
