Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यावज् जीवति काकुत्स्थः पिता मे जगती पतिः ।
शुश्रूषा क्रियताम् तावत् स हि धर्मः सनातनः ॥ ॥२-२४-१२॥
yāvaj jīvati kākutsthaḥ pitā me jagatī patiḥ । śuśrūṣā kriyatām tāvat sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥ ॥2-24-12॥
Translation
As long as my father, the descendant of Kakutstha and Lord of the Earth, lives, service should be rendered unto him. That is indeed the Eternal Dharma (Sanatana Dharma).
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब तक मेरे पिता, पृथ्वी के स्वामी, काकुत्स्थ (दशरथ) जीवित हैं, तब तक उनकी सेवा की जानी चाहिए। यही 'सनातन धर्म' है।
English Commentary
Rama provides a practical definition of 'Sanatana Dharma' (Eternal Law/Duty) in this verse. He clarifies that Dharma is not merely ritual, but the fulfillment of duty toward living elders. He reminds Kausalya of Dasharatha's stature as both her husband and the King ('Jagati Patih'). Serving him while he lives is the highest religious merit. Rama resolves the conflict between Kausalya's role as a mother and as a wife by asserting that the ancient laws prioritize the care of the spouse/elder. He effectively gives his mother a new mission: to be the pillar of strength for his father in his absence.

इस श्लोक में राम 'सनातन धर्म' की एक व्यावहारिक परिभाषा देते हैं। यहाँ धर्म का अर्थ पूजा-पाठ नहीं, बल्कि कर्तव्य पालन है। वे अपनी माता को याद दिलाते हैं कि दशरथ केवल उनके पति नहीं, बल्कि 'जगती पति' (राजा) और पूज्य पूर्वज 'काकुत्स्थ' के वंशज हैं। जीवित माता-पिता और पति की सेवा करना ही सर्वोच्च धर्म है। राम यह संदेश देते हैं कि जब कर्तव्य और भावना में संघर्ष हो, तो कर्तव्य (सेवा) को चुनना ही सनातन मार्ग है। वे अपनी माता को एक नया उद्देश्य देते हैं—पुत्र के अभाव में पति की संबल बनना।
