इमानि तु महा अरण्ये विहृत्य नव पन्च च ।
वर्षाणि परम प्रीतः स्थास्यामि वचने तव ॥२-२४-१६॥
imāni tu mahā araṇye vihṛtya nava panca ca |
varṣāṇi parama prītaḥ sthāsyāmi vacane tava ॥2-24-16॥
Translation
Having wandered in the great forest for fourteen (nine and five) years, I shall abide by your command with supreme joy.

मैं महावन में चौदह (नौ और पाँच) वर्ष विचरण करके परम प्रसन्नता के साथ आपके वचनों का पालन करूँगा (और फिर लौट आऊँगा)।
English Commentary
In this verse, Rama displays his exemplary character as a dutiful son and a stoic sage. Despite receiving the harsh sentence of exile, there is neither anger nor sorrow in his demeanor. He assures his mother Kausalya that he will complete the term of fourteen years (indicated here as nine and five) with 'parama prita'—supreme joy. Rama intentionally frames the exile as 'vihrtya' (wandering or spending time leisurely) rather than a punishment, primarily to alleviate his mother's anguish. By projecting a calm and cheerful acceptance of the forest life, he attempts to pacify Kausalya's maternal grief. It underscores Rama's philosophy that honoring the father's word is not a burden but a joyous duty, revealing his immense emotional strength and commitment to Dharma.

इस श्लोक में श्री राम का आदर्श पुत्र और स्थितप्रज्ञ स्वरूप प्रकट होता है। वनवास का दंड मिलने के बावजूद, राम के मन में न तो क्रोध है और न ही विषाद। वे अपनी माता कौशल्या को आश्वस्त कर रहे हैं कि वे 'परम प्रीतः' अर्थात् अत्यंत प्रसन्नता के साथ पिता की आज्ञा और वनवास की अवधि पूर्ण करेंगे। यहाँ 'नव पंच' (नौ और पाँच) का प्रयोग चौदह वर्षों के लिए किया गया है। राम अपनी माता के दुख को कम करने के लिए अपने वनवास को एक साधारण विचरण या भ्रमण (विहृत्य) के रूप में प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं, न कि किसी कठोर दंड के रूप में। वे माता को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं कि वनवास उनके लिए कष्टकारी नहीं होगा, ताकि कौशल्या का ममता से भरा हृदय शांत हो सके। यह राम की मानसिक दृढ़ता और माता-पिता के प्रति उनकी अगाध भक्ति का परिचायक है।
