श्रमम् न अवाप्नुयात् किम्चित् अप्रमत्ता तथा कुरु ।
दारुणश्चाप्ययम् शोको यथैनम् न विनाशयेत् ॥२-२४-२३॥
śramam na avāpnuyāt kimcit apramattā tathā kuru |
dāruṇaś cāpy ayam śoko yathainam na vināśayet ॥2-24-23॥
Translation
Act with such vigilance that he does not suffer the slightest fatigue/pain. Ensure that this terrible grief does not destroy him.

तुम सावधान (अप्रमत्त) होकर ऐसा करना जिससे महाराज को थोड़ा सा भी कष्ट न हो। और यह भी देखना कि यह दारुण (भयानक) शोक उनका विनाश न कर दे (उनकी मृत्यु का कारण न बने)।
English Commentary
Rama gives a direct directive to his mother here. The word 'apramatta' (vigilant/careful) is crucial; he instructs her to be relentlessly attentive to the King's needs. He explicitly states the goal: to ensure the King suffers no discomfort and, more importantly, that the 'daruna shoka' (terrible grief) of Rama's exile does not kill him ('na vinasayet'). Rama places the responsibility of Dasharatha's survival squarely on Kausalya. He asks her to sublimate her own suffering to mitigate the King's suffering. This request elevates Kausalya's role from a grieving mother to the life-sustaining guardian of the King, giving her a purposeful reason to remain in Ayodhya despite her desire to leave.

यहाँ राम स्पष्ट रूप से कौशल्या को उनके कर्तव्य का निर्देश दे रहे हैं। 'अप्रमत्ता' (सावधान/सतर्क) शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। राम कह रहे हैं कि दशरथ की देखभाल में जरा भी चूक नहीं होनी चाहिए। यह कौशल्या की जिम्मेदारी है कि वह राजा को शारीरिक और मानसिक रूप से संभाले। 'दान राहुल मृद'—राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि उनका वियोग एक भयानक शोक है, लेकिन वे माता को चुनौती देते हैं कि वे इस शोक को राजा के प्राण लेने का कारण न बनने दें। यह एक पुत्र का अपनी माता से अनुरोध भी है और भविष्य के राजा के रूप में (नैतिक स्तर पर) आदेश भी। राम चाहते हैं कि कौशल्या अपने दुख को भूलकर अपने पति के प्राणों की रक्षा करें।
