Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
क एतत् श्रद्दधेत् श्रुत्वा कस्य वा न भवेद् भयम् ।
गुणवान् दयितः राज्ञो राघवो यद् विवास्यते ॥ ॥२-२४-४॥
ka etat śraddadhet śrutvā kasya vā na bhaved bhayam । guṇavān dayitaḥ rājño rāghavo yad vivāsyate ॥ ॥2-24-4॥
Translation
Who would believe this upon hearing it? And who would not be struck by fear? That the virtuous Raghava (Rama), so beloved of the King, is being exiled to the forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह सुनकर कौन विश्वास करेगा? और किसे भय नहीं होगा? कि गुणवान और राजा (दशरथ) के अति प्रिय राघव (राम) को वनवास दिया जा रहा है।
English Commentary
This verse captures the profound shock and disbelief of Mother Kausalya. Rama is not just her son but the paragon of virtue and the King's favorite. The news that King Dasharatha, who loved Rama deeply, is exiling him defies all logic. Kausalya expresses that this event is so unprecedented that hearing it would strike fear in anyone's heart regarding the stability of justice and love in the world. The "fear" mentioned here is existential dread caused by the triumph of injustice over virtue. It highlights the tragedy of a situation where the most deserving individual is punished without cause, shaking the foundations of the kingdom's faith.

इस श्लोक में माता कौशल्या के आघात और अविश्वास का चित्रण है। राम केवल उनके पुत्र ही नहीं, बल्कि संपूर्ण राज्य के प्रिय और गुणों के सागर हैं। यह समाचार कि राजा दशरथ, जो राम से इतना प्रेम करते थे, स्वयं उन्हें वन भेज रहे हैं, तर्क से परे है। कौशल्या कहती हैं कि यह घटना इतनी अप्रत्याशित है कि इसे सुनकर किसी को भी भय लगेगा कि संसार में न्याय और प्रेम का कोई स्थान शेष है या नहीं। यहाँ "भय" का अर्थ केवल डर नहीं, बल्कि धर्म और सत्य की अनिश्चितता से उत्पन्न घबराहट है। यह एक माँ का विलाप है जो अपने पुत्र के निष्दोष होने के बावजूद उसे दंडित होते देख रही है।
