त्वया विहीनाम् इह माम् शोक अग्निर् अतुलो महान् ।
प्रधक्ष्यति यथा कक्षम् चित्र भानुर् हिम अत्यये ॥ ॥२-२४-८॥
tvayā vihīnām iha mām śoka agnir atulo mahān । pradhakṣyati yathā kakṣam citra bhānur hima atyaye ॥ ॥2-24-8॥
Translation
Without you here, this incomparable and great fire of grief will consume me, just as the sun burns up dry grass at the end of winter (in summer).

तुम्हारे बिना यहाँ मुझे यह अतुलनीय और महान शोक रूपी अग्नि वैसे ही जला डालेगी, जैसे सर्दी के बीत जाने पर (ग्रीष्म ऋतु में) सूर्य सूखी घास को जला देता है।
English Commentary
Kausalya uses a simile comparing herself to dry grass (kaksham) and her grief to the scorching sun or fire (chitra-bhanu) after winter. Dry grass lacks moisture and resilience, making it highly flammable. Similarly, without Rama, Kausalya feels devoid of her life force and defense mechanisms. Just as summer heat effortlessly incinerates dry tinder, the separation will consume her completely. This imagery highlights her vulnerability and total dependence on Rama for her survival. It implies that remaining in the palace without him equates to certain death through the sheer intensity of emotional burning.

यहाँ कौशल्या अपनी स्थिति की तुलना सूखी घास (कक्षम्) से करती हैं। जैसे सूखी घास में जीवन रस नहीं होता और वह आग पकड़ने के लिए तैयार होती है, वैसे ही राम के बिना कौशल्या का जीवन नीरस और रक्षाहीन हो जाएगा। 'चित्र भानु' (सूर्य/अग्नि) की प्रचंडता ग्रीष्म ऋतु में चरम पर होती है। कौशल्या का कहना है कि राम उनकी ढाल थे; उनके बिना वे शोक की तीव्रता को सहन नहीं कर पाएंगी और भस्म हो जाएंगी। यह उपमा उनके अस्तित्व के पूर्ण विनाश की आशंका को प्रकट करती है।
