Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वाङ्मात्रेण न भावेन वाचा सम्सज्जमानया ।
आनम्य मूर्ध्नि च आघ्राय परिष्वज्य यशस्विनी ॥ ॥२-२५-४०॥
Vāṅmātreṇa na bhāvena vācā samsajjamānayā । Ānamya mūrdhni ca āghrāya pariṣvajya yaśasvinī ॥ ॥2-25-40॥
Translation
She showed joy only with words, not with her inner feelings. With a faltering voice, the illustrious lady bent him down, smelled his head, and embraced him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह केवल वाणी से (प्रसन्नता दिखा रही थीं), भाव से नहीं। गद्गद (रुकी हुई) वाणी के साथ उस यशस्विनी ने राम को झुकाकर, उनका सिर सूंघा और गले लगा लिया।
English Commentary
The mask of happiness begins to slip. The text clarifies her joy is Vangmatrena (in speech only), not in Bhava (feeling). Her voice is faltering (Samsajjamanaya), betraying her sorrow. The act of smelling the head (Aghraya) is the ancient Vedic equivalent of a kiss on the forehead, signifying deep parental affection and protection. Despite her emotional collapse, she is still termed Yashasvini (illustrious), honoring her strength in completing the farewell ritual—bowing him down to bless him even as she clings to him.

कौशल्या का अभिनय ज्यादा देर नहीं टिक पाता। 'वाङ्मात्रेण' (केवल वाणी से) स्पष्ट करता है कि उनकी प्रसन्नता सतही है। उनकी वाणी 'सम्सज्जमानया' (लड़खड़ा रही) है, जो उनके भीतरी तूफान का संकेत है। वैदिक संस्कृति में बड़ों द्वारा छोटों के सिर को सूंघना (आघ्राय) स्नेह की सर्वोच्च अभिव्यक्ति मानी जाती है, जो चुंबन से भी अधिक पवित्र और गहरा है। 'यशस्विनी' शब्द यहाँ उनकी गरिमा को बनाए रखता है—इतने कष्ट में भी वह आशीर्वाद देने की अपनी भूमिका से पीछे नहीं हटीं।
