पितृशुश्रुषया पुत्र मातृशुश्रूषया तथा ।
सत्येन च महाबाहो चिरम् जीवाभिरक्षितः ॥२-२५-६॥
pitṛśuśruṣayā putra mātṛśuśrūṣayā tathā |
satyena ca mahābāho ciram jīvābhirakṣitaḥ ॥2-25-6॥
Translation
O Mighty-armed son, protected by your service to your father and service to your mother, as well as by your truthfulness, may you live long.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु पुत्र! पिता की सेवा और माता की सेवा (के पुण्य) से, तथा (तुम्हारे) सत्य-पालन के प्रभाव से सुरक्षित होकर तुम चिरकाल तक जीवित रहो।
English Commentary
Kausalya identifies Rama's supreme merit: his filial piety. She asserts that his 'pitru-shushrusa' (service to father) and 'matru-shushrusa' (service to mother) act as a spiritual shield ('abhiraksitah'). Rama is going to the forest precisely to honor his father's word, and Kausalya reframes this act of sacrifice as the very source of his safety. Combined with his adherence to 'Satya' (truth), these virtues are invoked to grant him longevity ('ciram jiva'). It is a powerful affirmation that ethical conduct generates a tangible protective force, guarding the practitioner against mortality.

यह श्लोक भारतीय संस्कृति में माता-पिता की सेवा के महत्व को सर्वोच्च स्थान देता है। कौशल्या यह नहीं कहतीं कि कोई देवता राम की रक्षा करे, बल्कि वे कहती हैं कि राम की 'पितृशुश्रुषा' और 'मातृशुश्रूषा' (माता-पिता की सेवा) स्वयं एक रक्षा-कवच है। राम ने पिता के वचन के लिए राज्य त्यागा और माता की आज्ञा मानकर (उन्हें साथ न ले जाकर) धर्म निभाया। यही त्याग अब उनकी आयु का रक्षक बनेगा। 'चिरम् जीव' (लंबी आयु जियो)—यह आशीर्वाद वन के खतरों के संदर्भ में अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। यह कर्मफल के सिद्धांत पर आधारित विश्वास है कि मातृ-पितृ भक्त का अहित नहीं हो सकता।
