Tayā adya mama sajje asminn abhiṣeke nṛpa udyate |
Pracoditaḥ sa samayo dharmeṇa pratinirjitaḥ ॥2-26-22॥
Translation
"Today, when preparations for my coronation were underway, she (Kaikeyi) invoked that promise, and the King was conquered/bound by Dharma."
English Commentary
Rama explains the mechanics of the tragedy. The timing was deliberate; Kaikeyi invoked the boons just as the coronation was 'sajje' (ready). The phrase 'dharmeṇa pratinirjitaḥ' is profound. It means the King was 'conquered by Dharma.' Usually, kings conquer enemies, but here, Dasharatha was defeated by his own adherence to truth. Rama presents Dasharatha as a victim of his own virtue, trapped between his love for his son and his duty to keep his word. This explanation seeks to mitigate any anger Sita might feel toward the King.
