चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वस्तव्यम् दण्डके मया ।
पित्रा मे भरतः च अपि यौवराज्ये नियोजितः ॥२-२६-२३॥
Caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyam daṇḍake mayā |
Pitrā me bharataḥ ca api yauvarājye niyojitaḥ ॥2-26-23॥
Translation
"I must live in the Dandaka forest for fourteen years, and Bharata has been appointed to the position of Crown Prince by my father."

English Commentary
The terms of the exile are laid out clearly: fourteen ('caturdaśa varṣāṇi') years in the Dandaka forest. This is not a short retreat but a significant portion of a lifetime. Simultaneously, he announces the political shift: Bharata is appointed to the 'Yauvarājye' (office of the Crown Prince). Rama states these facts without bitterness. He juxtaposes his own hardship (forest life) with Bharata's elevation (kingship) simply as the two outcomes of the boons, showing his complete acceptance of the situation.

यहाँ राम दो कठोर सत्य सामने रखते हैं। पहला, 'चतुर्दश वर्षाणि' (14 वर्ष) का वनवास—जो एक बहुत लंबी अवधि है। दूसरा, उनका स्थान भरत को दिया गया है। राम इसे बहुत ही तथ्यात्मक (matter-of-fact) ढंग से कहते हैं। 'दण्डके' का उल्लेख बताता है कि वनवास किसी उपवन में नहीं, बल्कि भयानक दंडकारण्य में होगा। राम के स्वर में भरत के प्रति कोई ईर्ष्या नहीं है, वे इसे केवल पिता की आज्ञा ('पित्रा नियोजितः') के रूप में बता रहे हैं।
