माता च मम कौसल्या वृद्धा सम्ताप कर्शिता ।
धर्मम् एव अग्रतः कृत्वा त्वत्तः सम्मानम् अर्हति ॥२-२६-३१॥
Mātā ca mama kausalyā vṛddhā samtāpa karśitā |
Dharmam eva agrataḥ kṛtvā tvattaḥ sammānam arhati ॥2-26-31॥
Translation
"And my mother Kausalya, who is old and emaciated by grief, deserves to be respected by you, keeping Dharma in the forefront."

"मेरी माता कौशल्या जो बूढ़ी हैं और (मेरे वियोग के) संताप से कमजोर हो गई हैं, धर्म को ही आगे रखकर (प्रमुख मानकर) तुमसे सम्मान पाने की अधिकारिणी हैं।"
English Commentary
Rama turns his attention to his mother, Kausalya. He describes her as "vṛddhā" (aged) and "samtāpa karśitā" (wasted away by grief), anticipating the physical toll his exile will take on her. He explicitly tells Sita that Kausalya "arhati" (deserves/earns) respect from her. By saying "dharmam eva agrataḥ kṛtvā" (keeping Dharma at the forefront), Rama implies that serving the mother-in-law is a supreme religious duty, transcending personal comfort or sorrow. He entrusts the care of his most vulnerable parent to his wife.

राम को अपनी माता कौशल्या की सबसे अधिक चिंता है। वे उन्हें 'वृद्धा' (बुजुर्ग) और 'सम्ताप कर्शिता' (दुख से दुबली/कमजोर) कहते हैं। राम जानते हैं कि उनके जाने के बाद कौशल्या का एकमात्र सहारा सीता ही होंगी। 'धर्मम् एव अग्रतः कृत्वा' (धर्म को आगे रखकर) वाक्यांश महत्वपूर्ण है; इसका अर्थ है कि भले ही परिस्थितियाँ कितनी भी कठिन हों, या मन में कितना भी क्लेश हो, धर्म का तकाजा है कि सास की सेवा की जाए। राम सीता को भावनात्मक संबल के रूप में कौशल्या के पास छोड़ना चाहते हैं।
