उपवासः च कर्तव्या यथा प्राणेन मैथिलि ।
जटा भारः च कर्तव्यो वल्कल अम्बर धारिणा ॥२-२८-१३॥
upavāsaḥ ca kartavyā yathā prāṇena maithili । jaṭā bhāraḥ ca kartavyo valkala ambara dhāriṇā ॥2-28-13॥
Translation
O Maithili, one must perform fasts according to one's stamina. One must wear matted hair and dress in bark garments.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मैथिली! प्राण शक्ति के अनुसार उपवास भी करने पड़ते हैं। जटाओं का भार सिर पर रखना पड़ता है और वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल के) वस्त्र धारण करने पड़ते हैं।
English Commentary
Rama describes the ascetic lifestyle modifications. He mentions upavasa (fasting) as a necessity, testing one's prana (life force/stamina). He details the physical transformation: wearing valkala (rough bark garments) instead of silk, and carrying the jata bhara (weight of matted hair). This implies a lack of hygiene and comfort. Addressing her as Maithili (Princess of Mithila), he contrasts her royal identity with the rugged, disheveled appearance of a forest ascetic, asking if she is ready to lose her physical grace and endure the coarseness of bark against her skin.

राम अब 'वेशभूषा' और 'व्रत' की बात करते हैं। वन में केवल रहना नहीं है, बल्कि एक तपस्वी का जीवन जीना है। 'उपवासः' (भूखे रहना) कभी भोजन की कमी से तो कभी नियमों के कारण करना होगा। 'जटा भारः'—बालों में तेल-कंघी नहीं होगी, वे उलझकर जटा बन जाएंगे जो सिर पर बोझ समान होंगे। रेशमी वस्त्रों की जगह 'वल्कल' (पेड़ की छाल) पहननी होगी जो त्वचा के लिए कठोर होती है। 'मैथिली' संबोधन यह याद दिलाने के लिए है कि वह विदेहराज जनक की पुत्री हैं, क्या वह यह सब दरिद्रता सह पाएंगी?
