देवतानों पितृइणाम् चकर्तव्यम् विधिपूर्वकम् ।
प्राप्तानामतिथीनाम् च नित्यशः प्रतिपूजनम् ॥२-२८-१४॥
devatānām pitṛiṇām cakartavyam vidhipūrvakam । prāptānāmatithīnām ca nityaśaḥ pratipūjanam ॥2-28-14॥
Translation
Worship of the gods and ancestors must be performed according to rituals. Also, guests who arrive must be honored and served daily.

देवताओं और पितरों का विधिपूर्वक पूजन करना होता है। साथ ही, वन में आए हुए अतिथियों (ऋषियों/मुसाफिरों) का नित्य सत्कार करना पड़ता है।
English Commentary
Rama points out that exile does not mean a vacation from duty. Religious obligations—worshiping gods (devata) and ancestors (pitri)—must continue vidhipurvakam (according to strict rules). Furthermore, the duty of hospitality (atithi pujan) remains. If guests (sages or travelers) arrive, they must be fed and honored. In a palace, servants do this; in the forest, with scarce food, Sita would have to share her meager rations and perform the labor of hosting. Rama highlights that the forest brings the burden of duty without the resources to fulfill it easily.

वन में संसाधनों की कमी है, पर 'कर्तव्य' (duties) कम नहीं हैं। राम याद दिलाते हैं कि गृहस्थ धर्म का पालन वहाँ भी करना होगा। देवताओं और पितरों का तर्पण और पूजन अनिवार्य है। सबसे कठिन है 'अतिथि पूजन'—वन में यदि कोई ऋषि या अतिथि आ जाए, तो सीमित फल-मूल में से उन्हें भोजन कराना होगा, भले ही खुद भूखा रहना पड़े। सीता, जो घर की मालकिन होंगी, उन पर यह दबाव रहेगा कि वे जंगल में आतिथ्य सत्कार कैसे करें। यह एक मानसिक तनाव (stress) है जिसे राम रेखांकित कर रहे हैं।
