Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
द्रुमाः कण्टकिनः चैव कुश काशाः च भामिनि ।
वने व्याकुल शाखा अग्राः तेन दुह्खतरम् वनम् ॥ ॥२-२८-२२॥
Drumāḥ kaṇṭakinaḥ caiva kuśa kāśāḥ ca bhāmini । Vane vyākula śākhā agrāḥ tena duhkhataram vanam ॥ ॥2-28-22॥
Translation
O Bhamini! The forest is filled with thorny trees, sharp Kusa and Kasa grass, and trees with entangled, chaotic branches. For this reason, the forest is exceedingly miserable.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे भामिनि! वन में काँटेदार वृक्ष, कुश और कास (नुकीली घास) तथा उलझी हुई शाखाओं वाले पेड़ होते हैं। इनके कारण वनवास और भी अधिक दुखदायी है।
English Commentary
The flora of the forest is described here not as beautiful, but as hostile. Rama warns Sita about the terrain she must walk upon and sleep on. The ground is covered in Kusa and Kasa grass, which are sharp and can cut the skin like blades. The trees are thorny (kaṇṭakinaḥ), and their branches are described as vyākula—agitated, entangled, or spreading wildly—making movement difficult and painful. Rama is dismantling the romanticized view of nature, presenting it instead as a physical obstacle course that will tear at her clothes and skin.

वन की वनस्पति भी वनवासी की शत्रु बन जाती है। राम बताते हैं कि वहाँ रेशमी गलीचे नहीं, बल्कि 'कुश' और 'काश' जैसी नुकीली घास है जो पैरों को घायल कर देती है। वृक्ष छायादार होने के बजाय 'कण्टकिनः' (काँटेदार) हैं। 'व्याकुल शाखा अग्राः' का अर्थ है कि पेड़ों की डालियाँ इतनी उलझी हुई और अस्त-व्यस्त हैं कि उनसे कपड़े और बाल उलझते हैं और शरीर छिल जाता है। यह श्लोक वन की दुर्गमता का वर्णन करता है, जहाँ चलना ही एक संघर्ष है। राम सीता को सचेत कर रहे हैं कि यहाँ का हर कदम पीड़ादायक होगा।
