वनम् तु नेतुम् न कृता मतिस् तदा ।
बभूव रामेण यदा महात्मना ।
न तस्य सीता वचनम् चकार तत् ।
ततः अब्रवीद् रामम् इदम् सुदुह्खिता ॥ ॥२-२८-२६॥
Vanam tu netum na kṛtā matis tadā । Babhūva rāmeṇa yadā mahātmanā । Na tasya sītā vacanam cakāra tat । Tataḥ abravīd rāmam idam suduḥkhitā ॥ ॥2-28-26॥
Translation
When the high-souled Rama thus made up his mind not to take her to the forest, Sita did not accept his words. Then, extremely grieved, she spoke the following to Rama.

English Commentary
This verse serves as the narrative transition. Despite the weight of the arguments presented by the Mahātmanā (high-souled) Rama, Sita remains unmoved in her resolve. The text notes she did not accept (na cakāra) his instruction to stay behind. Her reaction is described as suduḥkhitā (deeply grieved)—not because of the scary description of the forest, but because of the implication of separation from Rama. This sets the stage for Sita's famous rebuttal, where devotion transcends the logic of safety.

यह श्लोक एक कथा-सूत्र (narrative link) है। यहाँ वक्ता बदलता है (वाल्मीकि जी वर्णन कर रहे हैं)। यद्यपि राम 'महात्मा' हैं और उनका निर्णय तर्कसंगत था, फिर भी सीता ने उस वचन को 'न चकार' (नहीं माना/स्वीकृति नहीं दी)। यह सीता के प्रेम और पातिव्रत्य धर्म की दृढ़ता को दिखाता है जो राम के तर्कों से ऊपर है। 'सुदुह्खिता' शब्द बताता है कि राम द्वारा त्यागे जाने (अयोध्या में छोड़े जाने) की कल्पना मात्र से सीता कितनी आहत थीं। अब आगे के श्लोकों में सीता अपना पक्ष रखेंगी।
