एतत् तु वचनम् श्रुत्वा सीता रामस्य दुह्खिता ।
प्रसक्त अश्रु मुखी मन्दम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-२९-१॥
Etat tu vacanam śrutvā sītā rāmasya duḥkhitā । Prasakta aśru mukhī mandam idam vacanam abravīt ॥ ॥2-29-1॥
Translation
Hearing these words of Rama (about the hardships of the forest), Sita was filled with grief. With her face covered in incessant tears, she spoke these words softly.

राम के ये (वन के दोषों वाले) वचन सुनकर सीता बहुत दुखी हुईं। अपने चेहरे पर लगातार बहते हुए आंसुओं के साथ उन्होंने धीरे से ये वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Sri Rama's strategy to dissuade Sita by listing the horrors of the forest backfires. Instead of fear, his words elicit deep sorrow (duḥkhitā) because they imply separation. The description prasakta aśru mukhī (face bathed in continuous tears) vividly captures her emotional state. She speaks mandam (softly or slowly), indicating that her grief is choking her voice, yet she maintains the decorum and grace of a devoted wife. This verse sets the emotional tone for her rebuttal—it is not a fight for rights, but a plea born of desperate love.

श्री राम द्वारा वन की भयावहता का वर्णन सीता को भयभीत करने के बजाय दुखी कर गया। उनका दुख वन के कष्टों से नहीं, बल्कि राम के उस इरादे से उपजा है जिसमें वे सीता को अयोध्या में छोड़ना चाहते हैं। 'प्रसक्त अश्रु मुखी' (लगातार बहते आंसुओं वाली) और 'मन्दम्' (धीरे से) शब्द उनकी मानसिक स्थिति को दर्शाते हैं। वे क्रोधित नहीं हैं, बल्कि आहत हैं। उनकी धीमी आवाज उनके गहरे दुख और अपने पति के प्रति अगाध सम्मान का मिश्रण है। वे राम के तर्कों का उत्तर देने जा रही हैं, लेकिन उनका आरंभ आंसुओं से होता है।
