इह लोके च पितृभिर् या स्त्री यस्य महा मते ।
अद्भिर् दत्ता स्वधर्मेण प्रेत्य भावे अपि तस्य सा ॥ ॥२-२९-१८॥
Iha loke ca pitṛbhir yā strī yasya mahā mate । Adbhir dattā svadharmeṇa pretya bhāve api tasya sā ॥ ॥2-29-18॥
Translation
O highly intelligent one! A woman who is given by her parents with water (rites) according to dharma in this world, belongs to him even in the afterlife.

हे महामते! इस लोक में माता-पिता द्वारा जल के साथ (कन्यादान संस्कार में) जिसे जो स्त्री विधिपूर्वक दी जाती है, वह परलोक में भी उसी की रहती है।
English Commentary
Sita references the specific ritual of Kanyadan, where the bride is gifted by her parents using water (adbhir datta). This ritual signifies an irrevocable transfer of guardianship and a sacramental bond. She argues that this act binds her to him svadharmeṇa (according to one's own dharma) not just on earth, but in the hereafter. By reminding Rama of the sacred vows taken at their wedding, she questions his authority to leave her behind, as it contradicts the rites that united them.

सीता जी विवाह संस्कार की विधि का स्मरण कराती हैं। 'अद्भिर् दत्ता' का अर्थ है 'जल के साथ दी गई'—जो कन्यादान के समय पिता संकल्प लेते हुए करते हैं। जल साक्षी है कि सीता राम की हैं। वे राम को 'महामते' (बुद्धिमान) कहकर संबोधित करती हैं, यह अपेक्षा करते हुए कि वे इस धर्मिक बंधन को समझेंगे। उनका तर्क है कि जब माता-पिता ने उन्हें इस लोक और परलोक के लिए राम को सौंप दिया है, तो राम उन्हें वन जाने से कैसे रोक सकते हैं?
