Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नाम स्वं श्रावयन् रामो ववन्धे चरणौ पितुः ।
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रणतं पार्श्वे कृताञ्जलिपुटं नृपः ॥२-३-३३॥
nāma svaṃ śrāvayan rāmo vavandhe caraṇau pituḥ |
taṃ dṛṣṭvā praṇataṃ pārśve kṛtāñjalipuṭaṃ nṛpaḥ ॥2-3-33॥
Translation
Announcing his own name, Rama worshipped his father's feet. The King saw him bowing at his side with palms joined in supplication.

अपना नाम सुनाते हुए (अभिवादन करते हुए) राम ने पिता के चरणों की वन्दना की। राजा ने अपने पास हाथ जोड़कर और झुककर प्रणाम करते हुए राम को देखा।
English Commentary
Rama performs the Abhivadana, the formal method of greeting superiors in Vedic tradition, by explicitly announcing his name ("I am Rama") while touching Dasharatha's feet. This detail emphasizes Rama's adherence to scriptural injunctions (Shastras) and proper conduct. He does not assume familiarity despite being the favorite son; he follows protocol. King Dasharatha seeing Rama in this posture—krtanjaliputam (with cupped hands)—evokes a poignant contrast: the son who is capable of conquering the world is utterly submissive at his father's feet. This image of the bowing prince signifies that he is ready to rule precisely because he knows how to serve and obey.

शास्त्रों के अनुसार बड़ों को प्रणाम करते समय अपना नाम और गोत्र का उच्चारण करना (अभिवादन विधि) आवश्यक है। राम यहाँ उसी शास्त्रीय विधि का पालन करते हुए कहते हैं, "मैं राम हूँ" और चरण स्पर्श करते हैं। यह दर्शाता है कि राम धर्म के सूक्ष्म नियमों का भी उल्लंघन नहीं करते। राजा दशरथ का राम को इस विनीत मुद्रा में देखना उनके हृदय को गदगद कर देता है। एक शक्तिशाली योद्धा और भावी राजा का यह विनीत रूप भारतीय संस्कृति में शक्ति और शील के संतुलन का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। यह दृश्य पिता के हृदय में वात्सल्य और गर्व दोनों भाव उत्पन्न करता है।
