राज्ञस्तूपरते वाक्ये जनघोषो महानभूत् ।
शनैस्तस्मिन् प्रशान्ते च जनघोषे जनाधिपः ॥२-३-५॥
rājñastūparate vākye janaghoṣo mahānabhūt |
śanaistasmin praśānte ca janaghoṣe janādhipaḥ ॥2-3-5॥
Translation
However, as soon as the King's speech concluded, a great shout (of joy/applause) arose from the people. And when that public acclaim slowly subsided, the King (Dasharatha) (spoke again).
हिंदी अनुवाद
किन्तु राजा के यह वचन समाप्त होते ही, (सभा में) एक बहुत बड़ा जन-घोष (हर्ष ध्वनि) हुआ। और जब वह जन-घोष धीरे-धीरे शांत हो गया, तब राजा (दशरथ) ने (फिर से बोलना शुरू किया)।
English Commentary
This verse is the fifth shloka of the third Sarga in the Ayodhya Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. In the previous verse, Maharaja Dasharatha had announced the decision that Shri Rama's coronation as Crown Prince should be carried out immediately in the auspicious month of Chaitra, and that all arrangements should be made. Upon hearing the King's decree, all the citizens, ministers, and dignitaries present in the assembly were overwhelmed with joy. The phrase 'janaghoṣo mahānabhūt' denotes their strong approval and exhilaration; this noise was a great shout of applause. This public acclamation is the final proof that the decision to make Shri Rama the Crown Prince was not merely the King's, but the profound desire of the entire populace. Once the intensity of the joyful noise slowly subsided ('śanaistasmin praśānte ca'), the 'janādhipaḥ' (King Dasharatha) began to speak again. This incident elegantly portrays the unbreakable bond between a king and his subjects, the respect for the people's will, and the importance of public approval, skillfully presented by Valmiki.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड के तीसरे सर्ग का पाँचवाँ श्लोक है। पिछले श्लोक में, महाराज दशरथ ने घोषणा की थी कि श्री राम का यौवराज्याभिषेक शीघ्र ही, चैत्र मास की शुभता में किया जाना चाहिए, और सभी व्यवस्थाएँ तुरंत की जाएँ। राजा के इस निर्णय को सुनकर, सभा में उपस्थित समस्त प्रजा, मंत्रीगण और अन्य गणमान्य व्यक्ति अत्यधिक हर्ष से भर गए। 'जनघोषो महानभूत्' वाक्यांश उनके प्रबल अनुमोदन और उल्लास को दर्शाता है; यह शोर एक प्रकार से जयघोष था। यह जन-घोष इस बात का अंतिम प्रमाण है कि श्री राम को युवराज बनाने का निर्णय न केवल राजा का था, बल्कि संपूर्ण प्रजा की गहरी इच्छा थी। जब हर्ष ध्वनि की तीव्रता धीरे-धीरे शांत हुई ('शनैस्तस्मिन् प्रशान्ते च'), तब 'जनाधिपः' (राजा दशरथ) ने पुनः बोलना आरंभ किया। यह घटना एक राजा और उसकी प्रजा के बीच के अटूट संबंध, प्रजा के अधिकारों के सम्मान और सार्वजनिक अनुमोदन के महत्व को दर्शाती है, जिसे वाल्मीकि ने बड़ी कुशलता से प्रस्तुत किया है।
