Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सा विद्धा बहुभिर् वाक्यैः दिग्धैः इव गज अन्गना ।
चिर सम्नियतम् बाष्पम् मुमोच अग्निम् इव अरणिः ॥ ॥२-३०-२३॥
Sā viddhā bahubhir vākyaiḥ digdhaiḥ iva gaja anganā । Cira samniyatam bāṣpam mumoca agnim iva araṇiḥ ॥ ॥2-30-23॥
Translation
Like a female elephant pierced by poisoned arrows, wounded by those many words (of refusal), she released the tears held back for so long, just as the friction stick (Arani) releases fire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे विष बुझे बाणों से बिंधी हुई हथिनी हो, वैसे ही राम के (इनकार भरे) अनेक वचनों से आहत होकर सीता ने, बहुत देर से रोके हुए आंसुओं को वैसे ही छोड़ दिया जैसे अरणि (रगड़ने वाली लकड़ी) छिपी हुई आग को प्रकट करती है।
English Commentary
This verse uses powerful imagery. Sita is compared to a gaja-angana (female elephant) pierced by poisoned arrows (digdhaih), representing the toxicity of Rama's refusal to take her. The release of her tears is compared to an arani (fire-stick). Just as latent fire exists within the wood and bursts forth through friction, Sita's grief was contained within but was forced out by the friction of the argument. It connects the element of water (tears) with fire (agony).

यहाँ दो सुंदर उपमाएं हैं। पहली, सीता की तुलना घायल हथिनी ('गज अन्गना') से की गई है, और राम के मना करने वाले वचनों को विषैले बाण ('दिग्धैः') कहा गया है। दूसरी, 'अरणि' की उपमा है। प्राचीन काल में यज्ञ की आग दो लकड़ियों (अरणि) को रगड़कर निकाली जाती थी। जैसे लकड़ी में आग छिपी होती है और घर्षण से बाहर आती है, वैसे ही सीता के हृदय में शोक छिपा था जो राम के वचनों के घर्षण से आंसुओं के रूप में बाहर फूट पड़ा।
