Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तच्चैवामलचन्ध्रभम् मुखमायतलोचनम् ।
पर्यशुष्यत बाष्पेण जलोद्धृतमिवामुबुजम् ॥ ॥२-३०-२५॥
Tacc aivāmala candrābham mukham āyata locanam । Paryaśuṣyata bāṣpeṇa jaloddhṛtam ivāmbujam ॥ ॥2-30-25॥
Translation
Her face, resembling the spotless moon and possessing large eyes, began to wither with tears, just like a lotus taken out of water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनका वह निर्मल चंद्रमा के समान (सुंदर) और विशाल नेत्रों वाला मुख आंसुओं से वैसे ही सूखने (कुम्हलाने) लगा, जैसे जल से बाहर निकाला हुआ कमल कुम्हला जाता है।
English Commentary
Sita’s face is compared to a spotless moon for its beauty and a lotus for its delicacy. The metaphor of the "lotus taken out of water" (jaloddhṛtam) is poignant. Just as a lotus withers when separated from its life-source (water), Sita is physically withering at the mere thought of separation from Rama. Her tears, instead of nourishing, represent the heat of her grief.

यहाँ सीता जी के मुख की तुलना 'अमल' (दाग रहित) चंद्रमा और कमल से की गई है। जैसे कमल जल के बिना जीवित नहीं रह सकता और मुरझा जाता है, वैसे ही सीता राम के वियोग की आशंका रूपी ताप से और आंसुओं के कारण कुम्हला रही हैं। उनके आंसू जल तो हैं, किन्तु वे शोक के गर्म आंसू हैं जो सौंदर्य को जला रहे हैं।
