Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तव सर्वम् अभिप्रायम् अविज्ञाय शुभ आनने ।
वासम् न रोचये अरण्ये शक्तिमान् अपि रक्षणे ॥ ॥२-३०-२८॥
Tava sarvam abhiprāyam avijñāya śubha ānane । Vāsam na rocaye araṇye śaktimān api rakṣaṇe ॥ ॥2-30-28॥
Translation
O beautiful-faced one! Although I am capable of protecting you, I did not approve of your dwelling in the forest without knowing your full intent (determination).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे शुभ आनन (सुंदर मुख) वाली! यद्यपि मैं आपकी रक्षा करने में समर्थ हूँ, तथापि आपके पूर्ण अभिप्राय (दृढ़ निश्चय) को जाने बिना मैं आपके वनवास को पसंद नहीं कर रहा था।
English Commentary
Rama explains his strategy. He claims he was testing the depth of her resolve. He needed to know her sarvam abhiprayam (full intention/inner mind) before exposing her to the dangers of the wild. He assures her that his capability to protect her (shaktiman rakshane) was never in doubt; he only doubted whether she truly understood the hardships involved.

राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि वे 'शक्तिमान' हैं, परन्तु उन्होंने सीता को इसलिए रोका था ताकि वे सीता के संकल्प की परीक्षा ले सकें। वे जानना चाहते थे कि क्या सीता का निर्णय केवल एक आवेग है या 'सर्वम् अभिप्रायम्' (पूर्ण निश्चय)। अब जब सीता ने प्राण त्यागने की बात कह दी, तो राम को उनके निश्चय की गहराई का ज्ञान हो गया।
