Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किम् त्वा अमन्यत वैदेहः पिता मे मिथिला अधिपः ।
राम जामातरम् प्राप्य स्त्रियम् पुरुष विग्रहम् ॥ ॥२-३०-३॥
Kim tvā amanyata vaidehaḥ pitā me mithilā adhipaḥ । Rāma jāmātaram prāpya striyam puruṣa vigraham ॥ ॥2-30-3॥
Translation
O Rama! What would my father, the King of Mithila, think of you? Having accepted you as a son-in-law, did he unknowingly accept a woman in the form of a man?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! मेरे पिता मिथिला नरेश विदेहराज (जनक) आपको दामाद के रूप में पाकर क्या यह मानते होंगे कि आप पुरुष के शरीर में एक स्त्री (कायर) हैं?
English Commentary
This is one of the most stinging verses in the Ramayana. Sita uses harsh sarcasm to shake Rama out of his resolve to leave her. By asking if her father married her to a 'woman in a man's body,' she challenges Rama's masculinity and valor. The implication is that a true hero would not fear being unable to protect his wife in the forest. It is a rhetorical strategy born of desperation; she insults him only to provoke him into agreeing that he is indeed strong enough to take her along.

यह रामायण के सबसे तीखे और प्रसिद्ध श्लोकों में से एक है। सीता जी का दुःख यहाँ व्यंग्य बनकर फूट पड़ा है। वे राम के पौरुष को चुनौती देती हैं। उनका आशय यह है कि एक पुरुष का धर्म अपनी पत्नी का साथ देना और उसकी रक्षा करना है। यदि राम डर के कारण सीता को छोड़ रहे हैं, तो यह उनके पौरुष पर प्रश्नचिन्ह है। यह सीता का वास्तविक मत नहीं है, बल्कि राम को उत्तेजित करने और साथ ले जाने के लिए विवश करने हेतु बोला गया एक कठोर वचन है।
