Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
धर्मः तु गज नास ऊरु सद्भिर् आचरितः पुरा ।
तम् च अहम् अनुवर्ते अद्य यथा सूर्यम् सुवर्चला ॥ ॥२-३०-३०॥
Dharmaḥ tu gaja nāsa ūru sadbhir ācaritaḥ purā । Tam ca aham anuvarte adya yathā sūryam suvarcalā ॥ ॥2-30-30॥
Translation
O Sita (whose thighs resemble an elephant's trunk)! I am following the Dharma practiced by the virtuous in the past, just as Suvarchala follows the Sun.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे गजसूंड जैसी (सुडौल) जंघाओं वाली सीते! पूर्वकाल में सज्जनों द्वारा आचरित जो (पितृ-आज्ञा पालन रूपी) धर्म है, मैं उसी का अनुसरण कर रहा हूँ, जैसे सुवर्चला सूर्य का अनुसरण करती है।
English Commentary
Rama explains that his exile is an act of following ancient Dharma practiced by the good (sadbhir acaritam). He compares his adherence to duty to Suvarchala following the Sun. This comparison subtly reinforces the previous verses: just as he follows Dharma, Sita follows him. (Note: The reference to thighs like an elephant's trunk is a classical Sanskrit aesthetic compliment denoting strength and grace, not an insult).

सीता को साथ ले जाने की अनुमति देने के बाद, राम अब पुनः अपने वन जाने के कारण पर आते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि यह 'धर्म' है जिसे पूर्वजों ने निभाया है। यहाँ 'सुवर्चला' सूर्य की पत्नी (या प्रभा) मानी जाती हैं जो सदा सूर्य के साथ रहती हैं। राम अपनी तुलना सूर्य से नहीं, बल्कि धर्म के अनुयायी से कर रहे हैं (या यह भी अर्थ हो सकता है कि मैं धर्म का वैसे ही अनुगमन कर रहा हूँ जैसे छाया सूर्य का करती है)। (नोट: 'गज नास ऊरु' संस्कृत साहित्य में स्त्री सौंदर्य का एक पारंपरिक उपमान है)।
