Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न सत्यम् दानमानौ वा न यज्ञाश्चाप्तदक्षिणाः ।
तथा बलकराः सीते यथा सेवा पितुर्मता ॥ ॥२-३०-३५॥
Na satyam dāna-mānau vā na yajñāś cāpta-dakṣiṇāḥ । Tathā balakarāḥ sīte yathā sevā pitur matā ॥ ॥2-30-35॥
Translation
O Sita! Neither truth, nor charity and honor, nor sacrifices with ample fees (Dakshinas) are considered as efficacious as the service of one's father.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सीते! पिता की सेवा जितनी बलवती (कल्याणकारी) मानी गई है, उतना न सत्य, न दान-सम्मान, और न ही प्रचुर दक्षिणा वाले यज्ञ ही माने गए हैं।
English Commentary
Rama creates a hierarchy of religious merit. He places filial service above huge Vedic sacrifices (yajnas) involving large donations (apta-dakshinah), charity, or abstract truth. He is convincing Sita (and himself) that his exile is a superior spiritual undertaking compared to ruling the kingdom or performing kingly rituals.

राम यहाँ धर्म के अन्य अंगों (सत्य, दान, यज्ञ) की तुलना 'पितृ-सेवा' से करते हैं और पितृ-सेवा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ बताते हैं। वैदिक यज्ञों में भारी दक्षिणा दी जाती है, किन्तु पिता की आज्ञा पालन का फल उससे भी अधिक है। राम यह सिद्ध कर रहे हैं कि राज्याभिषेक (जो एक प्रकार का वैभव है) छोड़कर वन जाना (पिता की सेवा) आध्यात्मिक रूप से अधिक लाभकारी है।
