स माम् पिता यथा शास्ति सत्य धर्म पथे स्थितः ।
तथा वर्तितुम् इच्चामि स हि धर्मः सनातनः ॥ ॥२-३०-३८॥
sa mām pitā yathā śāsti satya dharma pathe sthitaḥ । tathā vartitum iccāmi sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥ ॥2-30-38॥
Translation
Established in the path of truth and righteousness, whatever my father commands me, I wish to act exactly according to that; for that indeed is the Eternal Dharma.

सत्य और धर्म के मार्ग पर स्थित मेरे पिता मुझे जैसी आज्ञा देंगे, मैं वैसा ही बर्ताव करना चाहता हूँ; क्योंकि यही सनातन धर्म है।
English Commentary
Rama presents his operational definition of Sanatana Dharma here. For him, Dharma is not a web of abstract theories but practical adherence to duty. by describing his father as "established in the path of truth" (satya dharma pathe sthitaḥ), Rama validates Dasharatha's difficult decision. He acknowledges that his father is bound by the truth of his boons to Kaikeyi, and protecting that truth is the son's supreme duty. Rama asserts that acting in accordance with the father's word is the eternal, unchanging law (Sanatana). This verse highlights the steely resolve of Rama, where personal desires are subordinate to duty. He explains to Sita that his exile is not a misfortune, but a necessary act to uphold the cosmic order of Truth.

श्रीराम यहाँ 'सनातन धर्म' की अपनी परिभाषा प्रस्तुत करते हैं। उनके लिए धर्म अमूर्त सिद्धांतों का जाल नहीं, बल्कि व्यावहारिक कर्तव्यनिष्ठा है। 'सत्य धर्म पथे स्थितः' कहकर वे अपने पिता दशरथ के निर्णय को वैधता प्रदान करते हैं, यह मानते हुए कि पिता का वचन सत्य से बंधा है, और उस सत्य की रक्षा करना पुत्र का परम धर्म है। भले ही कैकेयी के वरदान कठोर थे, किन्तु दशरथ का वचनबद्ध होना सत्य था। राम मानते हैं कि उस सत्य को निभाना ही 'सनातन' (शाश्वत) धर्म है। यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की उस दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है जहाँ व्यक्तिगत इच्छाएँ कर्तव्य के आगे गौण हो जाती हैं। वे सीता को समझा रहे हैं कि उनका वन जाना कोई दुर्घटना नहीं, बल्कि धर्म का पालन है।
