Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्निग्धो धर्मरतो वीरस्सततम् सत्पथे स्थितः ।
प्रियः प्राणसमो वशो भ्राता चापि सखा च मे ॥ ॥२-३१-१०॥
snigdho dharmarato vīrassatatam satpathe sthitaḥ |
priyaḥ prāṇasamo vaśyo bhrātā cāpi sakhā ca me ॥2-31-10॥
Translation
You are affectionate, devoted to righteousness, brave, always steadfast on the path of truth, dear to me, equal to my life, obedient, and you are my brother as well as my friend.

(राम कहते हैं) तुम मेरे लिए स्नेही, धर्मपरायण, वीर, सदा सन्मार्ग पर चलने वाले, प्रिय, प्राणों के समान, वश में रहने वाले (आज्ञाकारी) भाई और मित्र हो।
English Commentary
Before delivering the hard logic of why Lakshmana must stay, Rama validates Lakshmana’s worth with high praise. He lists Lakshmana's qualities: righteous (dharmarato), brave (vīra), and disciplined. Crucially, Rama calls him Prāṇasamo (equal to life) and Sakhā (friend), acknowledging that the separation is painful for him too. However, Rama also uses the word Vaśyo (obedient/submissive to control). By highlighting this quality, Rama is subtly leveraging Lakshmana’s obedience to ask him to do the hardest thing: stay behind. Rama is essentially saying, "I know you love me and follow me, so please follow this difficult command because I trust you."
