Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः अब्रवीन् महा तेजा रामः लक्ष्मणम् अग्रतः ।
स्थितम् प्राग् गामिनम् वीरम् याचमानम् कृत अन्जलिम् ॥ ॥२-३१-९॥
tataḥ abravīn mahā tejā rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam agrataḥ |
sthitam prāg gāminam vīram yācamānam kṛta añjalim ॥2-31-9॥
Translation
Then, the highly resplendent Rama spoke to the heroic Lakshmana, who stood before him with folded hands, ready to march ahead, begging [to accompany him].

तब महातेजस्वी राम ने अपने सामने हाथ जोड़े खड़े, साथ चलने के लिए तैयार और याचना करते हुए वीर लक्ष्मण से कहा।
English Commentary
This verse paints a vivid visual of the interaction. Rama, described as Mahātejā (possessing great radiance/energy), looks at Lakshmana. The description of Lakshmana is contradictory yet poignant: he is a Vīra (warrior) ready to march ahead (prāg gāminam), yet he is standing in a pose of supplication with folded hands (kṛta añjalim). He is begging (yācamānam) not for a favor, but for the right to face hardship. This posture signifies that Lakshmana has surrendered his ego but retained his courage. Rama acknowledges this potent mix of strength and submission before he begins his reply to explain the practical necessities of why Lakshmana should stay.
