Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तामार्याम् स्वयमेवेह राजाऽनुग्रहणेन वा ।
सौमित्रे भर कौसल्या मुक्तमर्थमिमम् चर ॥ ॥२-३१-१५॥
tāmāryām svayameveha rājā'nugrahaṇena vā |
saumitre bhara kausalyā muktamarthamimam cara ॥2-31-15॥
Translation
O Son of Sumitra! Sustain the noble Kausalya here, either by yourself or through the grace of the King. Perform this clear and faultless duty.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमित्रानन्दन! तुम स्वयं यहाँ रहकर अथवा राजा (दशरथ/भरत) की सहायता से उस आर्या कौशल्या का भरण-पोषण करो। इस स्पष्ट (दोषरहित) धर्म का आचरण करो।
English Commentary
Rama assigns a specific mission to Lakshmana. He instructs him to "sustain" (bhara) Kausalya. Rama offers two modes of operation: either ensure the King (Dasharatha or Bharata) takes care of her, or if they fail, Lakshmana must do it "by himself" (svayameva). This highlights Rama's foresight; he is creating a contingency plan for his mother’s safety. By calling this duty muktam artham (clear purpose/action free from fault), Rama emphasizes that protecting the mother is a superior form of Dharma compared to the sentimental desire to follow the brother. He is trying to elevate Lakshmana's forced stay from a punishment to a holy mission.

राम लक्ष्मण को एक स्पष्ट आदेश (Mandate) दे रहे हैं। वे कहते हैं 'भर' (भरण-पोषण करो)। राम लक्ष्मण को विकल्प दे रहे हैं—यदि राजा (दशरथ या भरत) सहायता करें तो ठीक, अन्यथा लक्ष्मण को 'स्वयमेव' (स्वयं अपने बल पर) माता की रक्षा करनी होगी। 'मुक्तमर्थमिमम् चर' का तात्पर्य है कि यह मार्ग संशय-रहित है। वन में मेरे साथ भटकने में अनिश्चितता है, लेकिन माता की सेवा करना एक निश्चित और श्रेष्ठ धर्म है। राम यह स्थापित करना चाहते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का रुकना कायरता नहीं, बल्कि एक गुरुतर दायित्व का निर्वहन है।
