धनुर् आदाय सशरम् खनित्र पिटका धरः ।
अग्रतः ते गमिष्यामि पन्थानम् अनुदर्शयन् ॥ ॥२-३१-२३॥
dhanur ādāya saśaram khanitra piṭakā dharaḥ |
agrataḥ te gamiṣyāmi panthānam anudarśayan ॥2-31-23॥
Translation
Taking my bow with arrows, and carrying a digging tool (spade) and a basket, I will walk ahead of you, showing the way.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं बाणों सहित धनुष लेकर और (हाथ में) कुदाल तथा टोकरी धारण करके आपको रास्ता दिखाता हुआ आपके आगे-आगे चलूँगा।
English Commentary
Lakshmana provides a detailed operational plan of his service. He presents himself as fully equipped for both defense and labor. He carries a bow (Dhanur) to protect Rama from beasts and demons, and a spade and basket (Khanitra pitaka) to dig roots and carry supplies. This imagery is powerful: the prince turning into a laborer for his brother. He reiterates that he will walk Agratah (in front), leading the way. By acting as a scout and pathfinder (panthānam anudarśayan), he ensures Rama walks on a safe path. He is offering practical, physical servitude.

लक्ष्मण अब अपनी भूमिका का 'Job Description' देते हैं। वे एक हाथ में सुरक्षा के लिए 'धनुष' रखेंगे और दूसरे में श्रम के लिए 'खनित्र' (कुदाल/फावड़ा) और 'पिटका' (टोकरी)। यह क्षत्रिय और सेवक का अद्भुत मिश्रण है। 'अग्रतः गमिष्यामि' (आगे चलूँगा)—यह उनका रक्षक भाव है। वे राम को मार्ग दिखाएंगे ('अनुदर्शयन्'), अर्थात कांटों और पत्थरों को हटाते हुए चलेंगे। लक्ष्मण यह सिद्ध कर रहे हैं कि वन में उनकी उपस्थिति विलासिता नहीं, बल्कि आवश्यकता है। वे राम के लिए वन को अनुकूल बनाने का संकल्प ले रहे हैं।
