Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वसन्ति इह दृढम् भक्त्या गुरुषु द्विज सत्तमाः ।
तेषाम् अपि च मे भूयः सर्वेषाम् च उपजीविनाम् ॥ ॥२-३१-३४॥
Vasanti iha dṛḍham bhaktyā guruṣu dvija sattamāḥ । Teṣām api ca me bhūyaḥ sarveṣām ca upajīvinām ॥ ॥2-31-34॥
Translation
"Excellent Brahmins reside here, firmly devoted to their Gurus. To them, and also to all my dependents (I wish to give)."

"यहाँ गुरुजनों की भक्ति में दृढ़ता से लगे हुए जो श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण निवास करते हैं, उन्हें और मेरे सभी आश्रितों (सेवकों आदि) को भी (मैं धन देना चाहता हूँ)।"
English Commentary
Rama's sense of responsibility is expansive. He thinks not only of the spiritually advanced ('dvija sattamah') but also of the 'upajivin' (dependents/servants). Leaving for 14 years would leave his personal staff destitute. This verse illustrates Rama's foresight and compassion; he ensures social security for his community before abdicating his position. It is a lesson in leadership: one's personal sacrifice should not become a burden on one's subordinates.

राम का दायित्वबोध यहाँ प्रकट होता है। वे केवल ब्राह्मणों की ही नहीं, बल्कि 'उपजीविनाम्' (आश्रितों/सेवकों) की भी चिंता कर रहे हैं। एक राजकुमार के रूप में, बहुत से लोग अपनी आजीविका के लिए राम पर निर्भर थे। वन जाने से पहले, राम सुनिश्चित करना चाहते हैं कि उनकी अनुपस्थिति में उनके सेवकों और आश्रितों को आर्थिक कष्ट न हो। यह एक आदर्श स्वामी और राजा का लक्षण है जो स्वयं कष्ट सहने को तैयार है लेकिन अपने आश्रितों को सुरक्षित करके जाता है।
