Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अपास्य फालम् कुद्दालम् कुरुष्व वचनम् ममम् ।
रामम् दर्शय धर्मज्Jनम् यदि किम्चिदवाप्स्यसि ॥२-३२-३१॥
apāsya phālam kuddālam kuruṣva vacanam mama |
rāmam darśaya dharmajñam yadi kiñcid avāpsyasi ॥2-32-31॥
Translation
"Throw away the spade and the ploughshare! Listen to my words. Go and see Rama, the Knower of Dharma; perhaps you might obtain something."

"इस फावड़े और कुदाल को फेंक दो और मेरा कहना मानों; धर्म के ज्ञाता राम के दर्शन करो (उनके पास जाओ); शायद तुम्हें कुछ (धन) प्राप्त हो जाए।"
English Commentary
The wife's command is abrupt and desperate: "Throw away" the tools of hard labor. She urges him to seek out Rama. Her logic appeals to Rama's reputation as "Dharmajnam" (Knower of Dharma). She believes that a righteous prince will not ignore a suffering Brahmin. Her phrasing "yadi kinchid avapsyasi" (if/perhaps you might get something) reveals her modest expectations; she isn't looking for a fortune, just some relief from their grinding poverty. It shows the reputation Rama held among his subjects as a refuge for the destitute.

पत्नी का स्वर हताशा और आशा का मिश्रण है। वह कहती है "अपास्य" (फेंक दो) उन औजारों को जिन्होंने तुम्हें जीवन भर केवल कष्ट दिया है। वह राम को "धर्मज्ञम्" (धर्म को जानने वाला) कहती है। उसे विश्वास है कि राम धर्म का पालन करते हैं, इसलिए वे एक दरिद्र ब्राह्मण को खाली हाथ नहीं लौटाएंगे। "यदि किंचित्" (शायद कुछ) वाक्यांश उसकी अनिश्चितता और विनम्र आशा को दर्शाता है—वह बहुत बड़ी मांग नहीं कर रही, बस इतना चाहती है कि जीवन का कष्ट कुछ कम हो जाए। यह आम जनता का राजा के न्याय और दया पर भरोसे का प्रतीक है।
