Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स भार्यावचनम् श्रुत्वा शाटीमाच्छाद्य दुश्छदाम् ।
स प्रतिष्ठत पन्थानम् यत्र रामनिवेशनम् ॥२-३२-३२॥
sa bhāryāvacanam śrutvā śāṭīm ācchādya duśchadām |
sa pratiṣṭhata panthānam yatra rāma niveśanam ॥2-32-32॥
Translation
Hearing his wife's words, he covered himself with his tattered garment—which was difficult to cover oneself with—and set out on the path where Rama's residence was located.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पत्नी के वचन सुनकर, वह (त्रिजट) अपनी फटी-पुरानी धोती (शाटी) को—जिससे शरीर ढकना भी कठिन था—संभालकर (लपेटकर) उस रास्ते पर चल पड़ा जहाँ राम का भवन था।
English Commentary
Trijata complies immediately. The description of his clothing is heart-rending: "Shatim dushchadam" (a cloth difficult to cover with). It implies his garment is so tattered and small that it barely preserves his modesty. This visual detail emphasizes his abject poverty. He wraps this rag around himself and heads towards the palace. It portrays the dignity of the poor who, despite their lack of material decency, step forward to claim their right to charity from the king. The journey from the forest to the royal palace represents a leap of faith.

पत्नी की बात मानकर त्रिजट तुरंत चल पड़ते हैं। "शाटीम् दुश्छदाम्" का वर्णन अत्यंत करुण है। उनकी धोती इतनी जीर्ण-शीर्ण है कि उससे शरीर को पूरी तरह ढकना भी मुश्किल ("दुश्छदाम्") है। यह उनकी गरीबी की चरम सीमा को दर्शाता है। एक विद्वान ब्राह्मण के पास उचित वस्त्र तक न होना राज्य के लिए लज्जा की बात हो सकती है, लेकिन यहाँ यह राम की दानशीलता की आवश्यकता को सिद्ध करता है। त्रिजट का संकोच त्यागकर निकल पड़ना यह बताता है कि परिवार का पेट भरने की जिम्मेदारी किसी भी संकोच से बड़ी है।
