Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उवाच च ततो रामस्तम् गार्ग्यमभिसान्त्वयन् ।
मन्युर्न खलु कर्तव्यः परिहासो ह्ययम् मम ॥ ॥२-३२-३९॥
Uvāca ca tato rāmastam gārgyambhisāntvayan |
Manyurna khalu kartavyaḥ parihāso hyayam mama ॥2-32-39॥
Translation
Then, consoling the Brahmin of the Gargya lineage (Trijata), Rama said, "Please do not harbor any anger; this was merely a jest on my part."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब श्रीराम ने गार्ग्य गोत्र वाले उस ब्राह्मण (त्रिजट) को सांत्वना देते हुए कहा— "आप अपने मन में क्रोध न करें, मैंने तो यह केवल परिहास (मजाक) किया था।"
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's incredible emotional stability and grace. despite facing the tragedy of exile, Rama retains his sense of humor and composure. His interaction with Trijata was not meant to mock the Brahmin's poverty but to playfully test his spiritual vitality (tejas) and lighten the somber mood of departure. Sensing that Trijata might feel slighted or confused by the odd request to throw a staff, Rama immediately offers comfort (abhisāntvayan). By clarifying it was a joke (parihāsa), Rama ensures that the charity is received with joy, not resentment. It shows that true generosity involves caring for the recipient's dignity as much as their material needs.

श्रीराम का चरित्र यहाँ अत्यंत उदात्त और मानवीय रूप में निखरकर आता है। यद्यपि वे वनवास जैसी कठोर विपत्ति का सामना करने जा रहे हैं, फिर भी उनका स्वभाव विनोदपूर्ण और शांत बना हुआ है। त्रिजट को लाठी फेंकने के लिए कहने के पीछे राम का उद्देश्य उनका अपमान करना नहीं, बल्कि उनकी शक्ति की परीक्षा लेना और वातावरण को हल्का करना था। जब उन्होंने देखा कि त्रिजट शायद इसे अन्यथा ले सकते हैं या संकोच कर सकते हैं, तो राम ने तुरंत उन्हें सांत्वना दी। 'मन्युर्न खलु कर्तव्यः' कहकर राम यह सुनिश्चित करते हैं कि दान प्राप्त करने वाला व्यक्ति प्रसन्न मन से जाए, न कि किसी ग्लानि या क्रोध के साथ। यह राम की संवेदनशीलता और शिष्टाचार का परिचायक है।
