Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दुष्कालेनेव भग्नानि भिभाजनवन्तি च ।
अस्मत् त्यक्तानि वेश्मानि कैकेयी प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥ ॥२-३३-२१॥
Duṣkāleneva bhagnāni bhibhājanavanti ca । Asmat tyaktāni veśmāni kaikeyī pratipadyatām ॥ ॥2-33-21॥
Translation
Let Kaikeyi obtain these houses abandoned by us, filled with broken vessels and ruined as if by a natural calamity or evil times.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दुष्काल (अकाल/भूकंप आदि) से टूटे-फूटे और बिखरे हुए बर्तनों वाले, हम लोगों द्वारा त्यागे गए उन मकानों को कैकेयी प्राप्त करे।
English Commentary
The citizens wish for their voluntary departure to mimic the aftermath of a catastrophe (Dushkala—bad times/famine/disaster). They want the city to look as though it has been ransacked or hit by an earthquake. The mention of "broken vessels" symbolizes the complete disruption of order and utility. They are effectively bequeathing a wreckage to Kaikeyi. The verb Pratipadyatam (let her obtain/accept) is used sarcastically. Kaikeyi wanted the kingdom; the citizens ensure she gets the physical territory but stripped of its wealth, beauty, and functionality.

प्रजा का आक्रोश यहाँ चरम पर है। वे सामान्य प्रवास नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि वे चाहते हैं कि उनका जाना किसी प्राकृतिक आपदा जैसा लगे। "दुष्कालेनेव भग्नानि"—मानो कोई भूकम्प या भारी विपत्ति आई हो जिसने सब तहस-नहस कर दिया हो। टूटे हुए बर्तन (भिन्नभाजन) दरिद्रता और विनाश के प्रतीक हैं। वे चाहते हैं कि कैकेयी जब नगर का निरीक्षण करे, तो उसे राजसी वैभव नहीं, बल्कि टूटे हुए बर्तन और मलबा मिले। यह कैकेयी की उस इच्छा ("मुझे राज्य चाहिए") पर करारा तमाचा है—नागरिक कह रहे हैं, "लो, संभालो यह खंडहर।"
