Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तु वेश्म पितुर्दूरा त्कैलासशिखरप्रभम् ।
अभिचक्राम धर्मात्मा मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमः ॥ ॥२-३३-२७॥
Sa tu veśma piturdūrā tkailāsaśikharaprabham । Abhicakrāma dharmātmā mattamātaṅgavikramaḥ ॥ ॥2-33-27॥
Translation
That righteous soul, possessing the gait of an intoxicated elephant, approached his father's palace, which shone like the peak of Mount Kailash from a distance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे धर्मात्मा (राम), मतवाले हाथी की सी चाल (विक्रम) वाले, दूर से ही कैलाश पर्वत के शिखर के समान चमकते हुए अपने पिता के भवन की ओर चले।
English Commentary
Valmiki describes Rama's demeanor beautifully. Despite having lost the empire moments before his coronation, Rama walks with the gait of a Matta-matanga (intoxicated elephant)—slow, steady, and majestic. There is no hurry, no slump in his shoulders, no sign of defeat. The palace is compared to Mount Kailash, symbolizing grandiosity and height. Rama is approaching the pinnacle of power not to ascend it, but to renounce it. His majestic walk proves that his nobility is intrinsic, not derived from the throne.

राम की चाल और मानसिक स्थिति का वर्णन अद्भुत है। राज्य छिन जाने के बाद भी उनकी चाल में कोई दीनता या शिथिलता नहीं है। वे "मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमः" हैं—मदमस्त हाथी की तरह शान से चल रहे हैं। यह उनके आत्मविश्वास और भयमुक्त मन का प्रतीक है। दशरथ का महल "कैलाश शिखर" जैसा ऊँचा और श्वेत है। यह उपमा महल की भव्यता और पवित्रता को दिखाती है, जहाँ अब एक दुखद घटना घटने वाली है। राम का धर्मात्मा होना यह स्पष्ट करता है कि वे वहां शिकायत करने नहीं, बल्कि वचन निभाने जा रहे हैं।
