Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् पूर्वम् ऐक्ष्वाक सुतः महात्मा ।
रामः गमिष्यन् वनम् आर्त रूपम् ।
व्यतिष्ठत प्रेक्ष्य तदा सुमन्त्रम् ।
पितुर् महात्मा प्रतिहारण अर्थम् ॥ ॥२-३३-३०॥
Tat pūrvam aikṣvāku sutaḥ mahātmā । Rāmaḥ gamiṣyan vanam ārta rūpam । Vyatiṣṭhata prekṣya tadā sumantram । Pitur mahātmā pratihāraṇa artham ॥ ॥2-33-30॥
Translation
Then, the high-souled son of Ikshvaku, Rama, intending to go to the forest, seeing the distressed Sumantra, stopped there to have his arrival announced to his father.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वन जाने को उद्यत, इक्ष्वाकु वंश के पुत्र महात्मा राम ने उस समय दुखी दिखाई देने वाले सुमन्त्र को देखकर, पिता को अपने आने की सूचना देने के लिए (द्वार पर ही) रुक गए।
English Commentary
Even in the midst of a life-altering crisis, Rama adheres to court protocol. He is the Mahatma (great soul) of the Ikshvaku lineage. Though he is ready to leave for the forest immediately, he stops upon seeing Sumantra. He does not storm into the King's chamber. Instead, he waits to be announced (Pratiharana artham). This shows his respect for the King's position and privacy. He remains a disciplined subject and a dutiful son until the very last moment. This discipline amidst chaos is what defines him as Maryada Purushottama.

राम वन जाने की जल्दी में हैं, फिर भी वे अपनी "मर्यादा" नहीं भूलते। यद्यपि वे राजकुमार हैं और पिता से मिलने जा रहे हैं, वे सीधे अंदर नहीं घुसते। वे द्वार पर रुकते हैं ("व्यतिष्ठत") और सुमन्त्र के माध्यम से अपनी उपस्थिति की सूचना भिजवाते हैं ("प्रतिहारण अर्थम्"). यह शिष्टाचार (Etiquette) का चरम है। इतनी बड़ी विपत्ति में भी, जब भावनाएं उफान पर हैं, राम राजदरबार के नियमों का उल्लंघन नहीं करते। वे अपने पिता की निजता और राजा के प्रोटोकॉल का सम्मान करते हैं।
