Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितुर्निदेशेन तु धर्मवत्सलो ।
वन प्रवेशे कृत बुद्धि निश्चयः ।
स राघवः प्रेक्ष्य सुमन्त्रम् अब्रवीन् ।
निवेदयस्व आगमनम् नृपाय मे ॥ ॥२-३३-३१॥
Piturnideśena tu dharmavatsalo Vana praveśe kṛta buddhi niścayaḥ |
Sa rāghavaḥ prekṣya sumantram abravīn Nivedayasva āgamanam nṛpāya me ॥2-33-31॥
Translation
Bound by his father's command and established in firm resolve to enter the forest, the righteousness-loving Raghava (Rama) looked at Sumantra and said, "Please announce my arrival to the King."

पिता की आज्ञा से धर्मप्रेमी श्रीराम ने वन जाने का पक्का निश्चय कर लिया। फिर उस राघव ने सुमन्त्र की ओर देखकर कहा— "महाराज से मेरे आगमन का निवेदन कीजिये।"
English Commentary
This verse highlights two defining characteristics of Rama: his unwavering commitment to Dharma (righteousness) and his adherence to protocol even in times of crisis. The phrase kṛta buddhi niścayaḥ (firmly resolved in mind) indicates that Rama has moved past the stage of shock or negotiation; he has accepted the exile as his duty.
Despite the emotional turmoil and the urgency of the situation, Rama does not barge into his father's presence. Instead, he asks Sumantra to announce him. This reflects his deep respect for the hierarchical structure of the court and his sensitivity toward his father's fragile emotional state. Rama anticipates that a sudden appearance might overwhelm the grieving King. This deliberate pause demonstrates Rama's extraordinary composure (sthita-prajna). He acts not as a victim of circumstance, but as a dutiful son and a disciplined prince who upholds the dignity of the throne even when the throne has rejected him.

इस श्लोक में श्रीराम की 'धर्मवत्सलता' और उनकी मानसिक दृढ़ता का अद्भुत चित्रण है। यद्यपि वनवास का आदेश अन्यायपूर्ण प्रतीत हो सकता है, तथापि राम के लिए पितृ-आज्ञा का पालन ही परम धर्म है। 'कृत बुद्धि निश्चयः' वाक्यांश यह दर्शाता है कि अब राम के मन में कोई द्वंद्व या संशय शेष नहीं है; उन्होंने वन जाने का निर्णय पूरी तरह से स्वीकार कर लिया है।
इतने बड़े संकट के समय भी राम शिष्टाचार और मर्यादा नहीं भूलते। वे सीधे राजकक्ष में प्रवेश नहीं करते, बल्कि मंत्री सुमन्त्र के माध्यम से अनुमति मांगते हैं। यह उनकी विनयशीलता और राज-मर्यादा के प्रति सम्मान को दर्शाता है। वे जानते हैं कि पिता दुखी हैं, अतः वे अचानक सामने जाकर उन्हें चौंकाना नहीं चाहते। यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की उस गहराई को दिखाता है जहाँ व्यक्तिगत कष्ट के ऊपर कर्तव्य और शिष्टाचार को स्थान दिया जाता है। राम की यह स्थिरता ही उन्हें 'पुरुषोत्तम' बनाती है।
