यम् यान्तम् अनुयाति स्म चतुर् अन्ग बलम् महत् ।
तम् एकम् सीतया सार्धम् अनुयाति स्म लक्ष्मणः ॥ ॥२-३३-६॥
Yam yāntam anuyāti sma catur anga balam mahat |
Tam ekam sītayā sārdham anuyāti sma lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥2-33-6॥
Translation
He, whom a great four-fold army used to follow when he moved, is now followed only by Lakshmana along with Sita as he walks alone.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस (राम) के चलते समय पीछे-पीछे विशाल चतुरंगिणी सेना चला करती थी, आज उसी राम के अकेले चलने पर, सीता के साथ केवल लक्ष्मण ही उनके पीछे चल रहे हैं।
English Commentary
This verse masterfully contrasts Rama's past glory with his current reality using the poetic figure of Virodha (contradiction/contrast). It recalls the image of the Caturanga Balam (the four-limbed army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots) that was Rama's constant entourage. This is juxtaposed with the current image: Tam ekam (Him alone). The vast military procession has shrunk to just two loyal souls: Sita and Lakshmana. This imagery evokes deep pathos (Karuna Rasa), emphasizing the totality of Rama's renunciation and the stark simplicity of the life he is embracing.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक सशक्त विरोधाभास (Contrast) प्रस्तुत करते हैं जो स्थिति की विडंबना को उजागर करता है। भूतकाल में राम के पीछे 'चतुरंग बल' (हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और पैदल सेना) चलता था। और आज? वे 'एकम्' (अकेले) हैं। उनके पीछे कोई सेना नहीं, बस दो प्रियजन हैं—सीता और लक्ष्मण। यह श्लोक राम की वर्तमान निस्सहाय अवस्था और उनके त्याग की गहराई को मापता है। वैभव का पूर्ण अभाव और एकाकीपन इस दृश्य को अत्यंत कारुणिक बना देता है। यह नियति के खेल का चित्रण है—राज्याभिषेक की भीड़ की जगह अब केवल सन्नाटा और दो अनुयायी शेष हैं।
