या न शक्या पुरा द्रष्टुम् भूतैः आकाशगैः अपि ।
ताम् अद्य सीताम् पश्यन्ति राज मार्ग गता जनाः ॥ ॥२-३३-८॥
Yā na śakyā purā draṣṭum bhūtaiḥ ākaśagaiḥ api । Tām adya sītām paśyanti rāja mārga gatā janāḥ ॥ ॥2-33-8॥
Translation
Sita, whom previously even the beings moving in the sky could not see, is today being seen by common people as she walks upon the royal highway.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस सीता को पहले आकाश में विचरण करने वाले प्राणी (देवता/पक्षी) भी नहीं देख पाते थे, आज उसी सीता को राजमार्ग पर चलते हुए साधारण जन देख रहे हैं।
English Commentary
This verse vividly captures the tragic reversal of fortune for Sita. In the royal tradition, the queens lived in the Antahpura (inner apartments), shielded from the public eye to such an extent that the text says even "sky-faring beings" could not glimpse her. This seclusion was a mark of her sanctity, status, and protection. Today, that protection is shattered. The contrast is stark and painful: the princess who was hidden like a precious gem is now exposed to the gaze of the common crowd on the public highway (Raja Marga). For the citizens, seeing the divine Sita walking amidst the dust and the crowds is a visual shock that emphasizes the severity of the exile. It highlights the immediate loss of dignity and comfort that the royal couple has been forced to endure.

यह श्लोक माता सीता की वर्तमान स्थिति और उनके दुर्भाग्य की पराकाष्ठा का वर्णन करता है। राजमहलों की परंपरा के अनुसार, कुलवधू का जीवन अत्यंत सुरक्षित और पर्दे में होता था (अवरोध)। सीता जी का रनिवास ऐसा था कि सूर्य की किरणें या आकाशचारी जीव भी उन्हें देख नहीं पाते थे। वह पवित्रता और सुरक्षा का प्रतीक थीं। किंतु आज विधि की विडंबना देखिए। वही कोमलांगी सीता, जो कभी महलों से बाहर पैर नहीं रखती थीं, आज "राज मार्ग गता"—सड़क पर पैदल चल रही हैं। भीड़ उन्हें देख रही है। प्रजा का यह कथन उनके गहरे दुःख और क्षोभ को प्रकट करता है कि कैसे एक महारानी को सामान्य पथिक की भांति सबके सामने अनावृत होना पड़ा। यह दृश्य अयोध्यावासियों के लिए असहनीय है।
