अर्ध सप्त शताः ताः तु प्रमदाः ताम्र लोचनाः ।
कौसल्याम् परिवार्य अथ शनैः जग्मुर् धृत व्रताः ॥ ॥२-३४-१३॥
Ardha sapta śatāḥ tāḥ tu pramadāḥ tāmra locanāḥ |
Kausalyām parivārya atha śanaiḥ jagmur dhṛta vratāḥ ॥2-34-13॥
Translation
Three hundred and fifty women, their eyes copper-red (from weeping), surrounding Kausalya, walked slowly, steadfast in their vows (devotion to their husband).

साढ़े तीन सौ (350) स्त्रियाँ, जिनके नेत्र रोने के कारण तांबे के समान लाल हो गए थे, अपने पतिव्रत धर्म का पालन करती हुईं, कौसल्या को घेरकर धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a specific count here: ardha sapta śatāḥ (half of seven hundred, i.e., 350). The physical description tāmra locanāḥ (copper-red eyes) vividly conveys their prolonged weeping and exhausted state. They walk śanaiḥ (slowly), which reflects the heavy burden of grief weighing them down. Significantly, they are walking Kausalyām parivārya (surrounding Kausalya). This shows solidarity among the wives. Even in a polygamous setup, in the face of this calamity, they rally around the mother of Rama, offering physical and emotional support. They are described as dhṛta vratāḥ (steadfast in vows), emphasizing that their participation is an act of sacred duty to their husband and the kingdom.
